The cover of the 2023/24 RELOCATE 2 Colorado Springs (www.RELOCATE2ColoradoSprings.com) features Garden Spirits a mural by Rosario Weston (an artist local to Colorado Springs and a teacher of art at St. Mary’s High School). Rosario emigrated to the United States from Chile at age 10. As a single mother of three sons, she rarely had time to develop her painting and sculpting to tell a story. During the pandemic shutdown she finally had the time necessary to focus on her art, which takes the interaction of nature, people doing what comes naturally and American contemporary culture to provide the subject matter of her works. Living and working in other countries influenced her use of color, textures and compositional style.

(The Downtown Partnerships of Colorado Springs captures the essence of creativity that Colorado Springs is noted for. Through its Art on the Street program, the re-imagined space of AdAmAn Alley (see page 7) or Artspace (the important work of bringing affordable housing for creatives via live-work units or studio space to the center city) the Partnership focuses on the leveraging of resources to create improvements in the community. Colorado Springs was the dream of General William Jackson Palmer who envisioned a city of the future where culture, temperance and gracious living would define the community. Fountain Colony, the original name for Palmer’s young city, quickly became known as Colorado Springs – a derivative of the bawdy mining and milling town of Colorado City and the therapeutic mineral springs of nearby Manitou Springs.

The discovery of gold in Cripple Creek brought thousands anxious to find their fortune: promoters, industrialists and gamblers - even artists and writers - came to what was the richest city per capita in the nation. Extravagant homes built by miners who became millionaires are now an exclusive neighborhood near downtown that is also home to Colorado College. When the gold played out, civic minded business men led by Spencer Penrose, determined that Colorado Springs’ natural beauty, Pikes Peak and the automobile would make it a unique tourist destination.

From these beginnings the city has seen continuous and sometimes explosive growth. Its location along with generally sunny and mild weather has made it an ideal location for military training and defense related high-tech industries. Small business is “BIG” in Colorado Springs and tourism is still the third largest part of the economy.

Then there is Colorado Springs’ long history with Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The AdAmAn Alley? It’s a magical space tucked away in Downtown Colorado Springs that celebrates the AdAmAn (add a man) Club that is over 100 years old and does the most astonishing feat each New Year’s Eve going back to 1922. HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Colorado public universities are no longer requiring standardized test scores for freshman admission; legacy and family relationships are no longer allowed in the process as well. Each district sets its own graduation requirements. There are no specific courses or number of courses required by the state guidelines other than those legislated by law. One course in Civics, History and Civil Government of the U.S. and of the State of Colorado, and by 2023, one course that incorporates genocide and holocaust studies.

Falcon & Peyton

Falcon and Peyton are also areas of Colorado Springs that have been on an accelerated growth curve as people leave the “city” for more of the quiet life. With a horizon that stretches as far as the eye can see topography is one of rolling grasslands dotted with densely treed areas. Falcon and Peyton capture the hearts of those wanting to live on the open range, but with all the modern amenities nearby. Large scale communities like Meridian Ranch and Banning Lewis Ranch are helping to fuel the fast-paced growth. Fountain boasts the charming aspects of hometown country living with comforts of contemporary urban amenities close by. Located along I-25 and Fountain Creek, the City of Fountain spreads over 22 square miles, and boasts a population of around 30,000 residents. With strong, long-lasting ties to Fort Carson, Fountain hosts a large population of active military, military family members, retirees and veterans, representing approximately 50-60% of the overall population. With a median age of 29.9 and over 9,800 households in 2020, the Fountain community is young, active and continuing to grow. Fountain projects an additional 3,000 more residents through 2024.

Fountain Valley

Fountain Valley is about ten miles south of Colorado Springs and thirty miles north of Pueblo. Fountain is the only incorporated city in the valley. Widefield and Security are high density housing developments. All three are neighbors of Fort Carson, one of the youngest posts of the U.S. Army. The growth of Fort Carson has had a profound positive impact on the valley. New housing, businesses and retail opportunities keep sprouting up all over the area adding to an already bustling community. Widefield started in the mid-60’s when Widefield Homes began construction of this community. Security/Widefield comprise the largest unincorporated area in Colorado with growth projections that could potentially triple the numbers of homesteads over the next 20 years. Widefield School District 3 serves Security/Widefield and takes on several key functions normally performed by municipal governments. The school district manages the Community Center (Widefield Community Education and Recreation Services), oversees the Security Public Library and has built trails and parks in the area for the citizens of the school district. Its students enjoy a wide variety of curriculum choices in up to date facilities with low student/teacher ratios. Monument is bordered by Pike National Forest on the west, Colorado Springs and the United States Air Force Academy on the south, the City of Castle Rock on the north and rolling plains to the east.Residents enjoy recreational hiking and biking trails, fishing and other outdoor amenities.

The Tri-Lakes area is about 19 miles north of Colorado Springs along I-25. Monument, Palmer Lake, Woodmoor, Gleneagle and Black Forest sit at an average altitude of 7,000 feet offering a diverse landscape of rolling hills, mountain terrain and thick forests. It is a vibrant place to live with easy access to first class cultural activities, medical care, educational facilities and a wide variety of attractions, shopping and outdoor recreation. Tri-Lakes is home to a thriving arts community with galleries displaying the works of local and regional artists. It is also home to the United States Air Force Academy. If you are looking for unique, come to the Tri-Lakes area.

Once home to potato farming and ice harvesting, the town has grown to a community filled with small businesses, convenient retail centers, excellent schools, art and history. Monument enjoys unique galleries and boutiques, restaurants and business offices. During the holiday season the area is a favorite stop for locals and tourists to enjoy celebrations such as Small Town Christmas and arts and craft fairs. Black Forest is the dark patch of thick pine you notice north of Colorado Springs when flying into the city. Black Forest is a rural area that the residents are pretty much set on keeping that way. Many homes are situated on five or more acres. Abundant wildlife lives in the surrounding woods. Ranches that dot the area raise everything from llamas to Arabian horses. Temperatures run about ten degrees cooler than Colorado Springs, the growing season is about a month shorter and the area receives more moisture, especially in the winter. Residents enjoy miles of trails in the rolling, wooded hills of Fox Run and Black Forest Regional Parks. At the same time, Black Forest is only fifteen minutes from the malls and shopping centers located in the northern part of Colorado Springs. Black Forest’s quality of life is reflected in its good schools, spectacular homesteads, unlimited recreation…with a little wilderness thrown in for good measure.

Black Forest is a census-designated place (CDP) in El Paso County, Colorado. A CDP is a community that lacks a separate municipal government, but otherwise resembles an incorporated city or village. Palmer Lake is three miles northwest of Monument at 7,200 feet above sea level. Established in 1872 atop the Palmer Divide to provided water for the steam engines of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, the surrounding area remained largely ranch and farmland until the Air Force Academy opened in 1958. Housing and growth began to boom when Colorado Springs began to migrate north. Palmer Lake has a unique charm and offers stunning views of the front range. High Altitude Tips for Visitors and New Residents

Colorado Springs can get to an altitude a little over 6,000 feet. Victor and Cripple Creek get up to 9,500 feet and the summit of Pikes Peak sits at 14,115 feet. This is good for our bodies (because it burns more calories), but it can also cause some very uncomfortable side effects, which may ruin a great adventure you’ve been looking forward to. Just remember, high altitudes, when you haven’t had the time to adjust can produce dizziness, nausea, headaches and dehydration.

Give your body time to adjust. Avoid strenuous exercise and drink lots of water. Also cut down on alcohol and caffeine and make sure you’re in good physical condition to take advantage of activities at higher altitudes.

Described as “scenic and exhilarating”, loose gravel, great views.

Log on for rates and hours. The range complex sits on 400 acres of army land. The entrance is outside of Fort Carson. A joint venture between the Army, County, Sheriff, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife Division, this facility is open to those 6 years old and up. Now open for rifle and pistol shooting (120 positions across 7 ranges), a skeet and trap range, clubhouse with retail store and restaurant will be added in phases.

Centennial Trail – This 7.2 mile paved trail is located at Hwy. 67 and Midland Ave. It connects Woodland Park with Pike National Forest campgrounds.

Divide Loop Trail – Trail can be reached from the Hayden Divide Community Parkand is a 2.75 mile gravel path.

Gold Camp Trail – In Cripple Creek, this trail is three miles long. There are two trailheads allowing for historic rides through mining areas. Mueller State Park – See above.

Colorado Springs has over 9,000 acres of parkland and 500 acres of trails. They encompass a wide variety of areas from forested foothills and scenic mesas to rock formations and sheer walled canyons. Thousands of acres are devoted to small neighborhood parks and community parks.

America the Beautiful Park: Cimino Drive off Colorado Avenue. Playground walking paths with access to Midland Trail and Pikes Peak Greenway Trail.

Cottonwood Creek Park: Dublin and Rangewood. Recreation center with indoor pool, baseball fields, in-line hockey, soccer fields, tennis, disc golf course, jogging trail.

John Venezia is located at the intersection of Briargate Parkway and Union Blvd on the north side. Sporting a “ranch” theme, the amenities include soccer fields, in-line hocky rink/basketball court, pickleball courts, playground, sprayground, and walking trails.

Memorial Park: Pikes Peak and Hancock Ave. Aquatic and fitness center. Prospect Lake (allows motorized and non-motorized boating), water skiing, Sertich Ice Center, Velodrome. North Slope Recreation: 2,267 acres. Pikes Peak Toll Rd. off Hwy. 24. Three reservoirs on North Slope of Pikes Peak. No swimming. Non-motorboating, fishing, biking, hiking.

Palmer: 731 acres. 3650 Maizeland Rd. and North Academy Boulevard. Baseball diamonds, playground, football/soccer field, volleyball courts, horse stables, 25 miles of trails, dog park.

South Slope Recreation Area: This is a high altitude experience on the south slope of Pikes Peak; the drive from downtown takes approximately 1 1/2 hours and is open Thursday - Sunday from the end of May until the end of September. A permit is required and can be purchased online. Fishing and boating are permitted at McReynolds and Mason reservoirs, water level permitting.

Ute Valley: 338 acres. 1705 Vindicator Drive. Wetland area, biking and hiking trails.

Open Space

Red Rock Canyon: 1,474 acres. 3550 W. High St. off I-25 along Highway 24. Miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, 2 “off leash” dog loops, rock climbing with permit, picnic pavilion, and portable toilets at main parking lots. El Paso County Parks

Bear Creek: 21st at West Rio Grande Ave. Located in the Rocky Mountain foothills, there are ten miles of trails, playing fields, volleyball, basketball, tennis courts, archery range, picnic areas and horseback riding. The Bear Creek Nature Center is within the park.

Bear Creek Trailhead extends along Bear Creek through the park and connects to the Paul Imemann Trail to Manitou Springs.

Black Forest Park: Derives its name from the 200 square miles of Ponderosa pine it is located in. Located at Shoup and Milam Road it holds playing fields, tennis courts and hiking trails.

Clear Spring Ranch Park: Located along Fountain Creek in Fountain. The 930 acres offers grassland and foothill ecosystems, miles of trails, a pavilion and restrooms.

Falcon Regional Park: Off Eastonville Road, East of Meridian Ranch Development. 215 acres will have active sports areas and open spaces.

Fox Run: Roller Coaster Road at Stella Drive. A thickly forested winter wonderland, perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Climbing rock, playing fields, picnic areas, trails and ponds as well.

Fountain Creek Park: Along Fountain Creek between Widefield and Fountain. Located within a floodplain, it is home to water fowl, stocked ponds, aquatic animals and 230 species of birds. Nature center.

Fountain Creek Regional Trail follows Fountain Creek for 10.5 miles and is great for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

Homestead Ranch is located at the edge of the Black Forest and is 450 acres in size. Has a 3 mile horse trail, playground, pavilions.

New Santa Fe Trail, located between Palmer Lake and Baptist Road, is 15 miles long and drops 1,200 feet in elevation. Great for hiking and biking with magnificent vistas.

Paint Mines Interpretive Park, located southwest of Calhan on Paint Mine Road. Geological formations include spires and hoodoos in colorful clay. The mines have evidence of human life as far back as 9,000 years. Four miles of trails and interpretive signage.

Rainbow Falls: Features a 50 ft. waterfall, unique rock formations, and trail to the top. Located at west end of Manitou Springs off Serpentine Drive.

Rock Island Trail follows an abandoned railway line. The 10.5 miles of gravel surface makes it a safe passage for non-motorized use.

Ute Pass Regional Trail This 40 mile trail, being completed in sections, will connect Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek in Teller County. It is part of the American Discovery and America the Beautiful trails which are historic and used in pilgramages by the Ute Indians.

Widefield Community Park Disc Golf Course is home of many state championships. The course can play from 4,944 to 7,908 feet. A brook runs down the center for a little excitement. Playground, basketball and pickleball courts, trails and exercise areas. Fontaine Blvd. at Drury Lane.

Florissant Community Park: 358 Circle Drive (off Hwy. 24) in Florissant. Ten acres of fun including basketball court, play lot, ballfield, picnic area and home of the library.

Four Mile Scenic Park: In Florissant, on the Gold Belt National Byway, at the junction of Teller County Road #1 and Road #11. A pedestrian bridge over historic Hay Creek has over 50 brands memorialized in it from area ranches. Almost seven acres in size, the land is dedicated to agricultural and graphic interpretation

Hayden Divide Community Park: Located at the junction of Hwy. 24 and 67, the perfect place for baseball or softball, play lots, concession stand, picnic area on 12.5 acre site. Divide loop 2 1/2 mile hiking trail

Sunnywood Neighborhood Park: North of Woodland Park on Lovell Gulch Road. This four acre play area includes a t-ball field, volleyball and basketball courts, play lot and picnic area.

Teller County Fairground: Located on Teller County Road #1 in Cripple Creek. Home of the county fair, it has an arena, RV hook-ups, equestrian barn, pavilion, kitchen and picnic area.

Cheyenne Mountain State Park: 2,701 acres. Located along Hwy. 115 at 410 JL Ranch Heights (across from Fort Carson). Comprised of “prairie to peak” ecosystems, it includes 21 trails covering 28 miles of biking/hiking, archery range, educational and interpretive programs and campgrounds with full hook-up facilities available. Lake Pueblo State Park: I-25 to Pueblo, then U.S. Hwy. 50 west four miles, 640 Reservoir Rd., 561-9320. A spectacular water sport reservoir with 15,377 acres and 60 miles of shoreline. Two marinas, on-site fish hatchery, Rock Canyon swim beach, campsites and miles of trails.

On December 20, 2019, the President signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2020, establishing the U.S. Space Force as a new Armed Service within the Department of the Air Force (DAF). Subsequently, on October 21, 2020, the Secretary of the Air Force re-designated the former Air Force Space Command staff organization at Peterson Space Force Base as the Headquarters Space Operations Command. This re-designation aligned the Field Command responsibility for organizing, training, equipping, and presenting US Space Force forces to the staff and commander responsible for executing this mission. SpOC is one of three Field Commands within the US Space Force. Schriever Space force Base

Schriever Space Force Base boasts several mission sets, including four Space Deltas whose missions are focused on satellite control networks, cyberspace, GPS, satellite communications and protecting and defending operations. Located 12 miles east of Colorado Springs the base is home to 8,000 military and civilian employees. It is also home to Joint Task Force-Space Defense, the 527th Space Aggressors Squadron, Missile Defense Agency, Air Force Tactical Exploitation of National Capabilities unit and the U.S. Navy Observatory Alternate Master Clock.

In June 1988, Falcon Air Force Station was designated Falcon Air Force Base. And on June 5, 1998, Falcon Air Force Base was renamed Schriever Air Force Base in honor of retired Gen. Bernard A. Schriever, who pioneered development of the nation’s ballistic missile programs. Schriever Space Force Base is the only Air Force base that has been named after a person who was living at the time. Gen. Schriever died June 20, 2005.

Today, Schriever Space Force Base makes up a portion of Space Base Delta 1, as part of the U.S. Space Force restructure. It operates remote tracking stations, satellite operations centers and other command and control facilities around the world. These facilities monitor satellites during launch, command and control satellites while they are in orbit, fix satellite anomalies when they occur and dispose of satellites when they reach the end of their useful life.

peterson Space force Base

Located east of Colorado Springs and adjacent to the Colorado Springs Airport off US Highway 24, Peterson SFB traces its roots to the Colorado Springs Army Air Base established on May 6, 1942. On December 13, 1942, it was renamed Peterson Army Air Base in memory of 1st Lt. Edward Peterson who was killed during takeoff from the base on a training mission. Known as Pete Field the base served at varying times as a training site for photo reconnaissance, bomber, and fighter missions.

Today, it is home to Space Base Delta 1, which provides support to missile warning, missile defense, and space control missions worldwide. SBD 1 hosts more than 50 mission partners on Peterson SFB, including the 302nd Airlift Wing (Reserve), as well as several headquarters including Space Operations Command, three Space Deltas, North American Aerospace Defense Command, U.S. Northern Command, and Army Strategic Command, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command.

Collectively, SBD 1 consists of a medical group, a space base group and numerous staff agencies that provide health care, mission readiness support, communication and information technology, security, civil engineering, fire protection, environmental management, manpower, personnel, logistics, contracting, base services and housing support for Peterson SFB, Schriever SFB, and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station in Colorado, Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, New Boston Space Force Station in New Hampshire, and Ka’ena Point Space Force Station and the Air Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing site in Hawaii. SBD 1 supports more than 18,400 personnel and has an estimated economic impact of $6.275 billion to the local economy.

U.S. Space Command Staying in Colorado Springs!

U.S. Space Command, a military command that oversees space operations for the U.S. Armed Forces, will remain in Colorado Springs, Colorado, per the decision of President Joe Biden. The command is part of the U.S. Space Force, which was established in 2019.

Sharing a flight line with the City of Colorado Springs allows Peterson SFB personnel to work closely with the city to ensure vital services are available when the mission requires it. The 302nd AW is the only Air Force Reserve wing with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) to aid in fighting wildfires The fire department and explosive ordnance disposal teams are also available to the airport at any time. The mission of the United States Air Force Academy is to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the Air Force and Space Force in service to our nation.

Authorized in 1954, the United States Air Force Academy came to Colorado in 1955 at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. At the same time construction began in Colorado Springs on the permanent site of the Academy, which was occupied by the wing of cadets in 1958. the training ground for tomorrow’s Air Force and Space Force leaders the scenic 18,500-acre campus doubles as university and boot camp.

While many cities in the United States support colleges and universities or have military bases within their boundaries only a few have a facility that combines the unique attributes of both into one. Fort Carson – The Mountain Post, and home to the 4 th Infantry Division, sits on 137,000 acres just south of Colorado Springs. It owns an additional 236,000-acre training site in southeastern Colorado. Fort Carson is the state's 3rd largest employer and accounts for $2.4 billion economic impact in El Paso County

Named after the famous frontiersman Carson, the fort was established in 1942, three weeks after Pearl Harbor.

Currently the post has a population of approximately 26,000 active duty military, 31,000 Family members and is served by over 5,700 civilian employees. The post’s 4th Infantry Division has armored, Stryker, aviation and sustainment brigades. The "Ivy" Division celebrated its centennial December 10, 2017.

Throughout the years, the mission of Fort Carson has remained as it was in the past - training troops to be combat ready. It's extensive on post training range areas and Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site provide ideal facilities for large force-on-force maneuver training and live-fire training.

In 1995, the troops of the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) moved to Fort Carson. In 1999, Fort Carson became the headquarters for the 7th Infantry Division, which is in charge of training National Guard personnel. It was also home to the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment that deployed in 2003 in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

In 2006, the 3rd ACR left Fort Carson for Fort Hood, Texas. In 2009, 4th Infantry Division once again took up residency at the Mountain Post. Additional changes are always underway at the fort, but it is safe to say Fort Carson will continue to have a significant impact on Colorado Springs and the surrounding area. www.carson.army.mil

Cheyenne Mountain Space force Station

Cheyenne Mountain SFS has its origins in the Cold War as a high-tech underground complex that housed the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD). NORAD provided early warning radar protection from aircraft, missiles and space vehicle threats directed at the United States and Canada. Since the end of the Cold War activities have not diminished at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex but have evolved to meet the realities of a changing world.

The 4.5 acre, 15 steel building complex, constructed in tunnels and chambers cut into Cheyenne Mountain’s rock, host multiple commands: North American Aerospace Command (NORAD), United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) and the U.S. Space Force. It is operated by Space Base Delta 1 at nearby Peterson SFB and is the central collection and coordination center for a worldwide system of satellites, radars and sensors that provide early warning of any missile, air or space threat to North America. It is also the focal point for air defense operations that would counter air, missile or space attacks on the continent.

Cheyenne Mountain is a unique facility in that it is 2,000 feet underground, has 25-ton blast doors to protect it from nuclear attack and is essentially an underground city built on springs. It is a joint and bi-national command made up of personnel from the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Canadian Armed Forces, with command centers staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
